After the Paris Peace Accords, American soldiers had started to return home. Although, there was still much tension between South and North Vietnam. Many South Vietnamese citizens were afraid that Saigon, the capitol city of South Vietnam, would be attacked and overrun. Sadly, many South Vietnamese citizens left their families, their homes, and their lives behind in order to obtain a passport and plane tickets to leave the country. On the day of April 29, 1975, many American soldiers and South Vietnamese citizens were unable to get on their flights out of the country. General Nguyan Van Toan had decided to surmount Saigon. As the citizens had expected, he had order a massive assault upon Saigon, launching heavy artillery fire on the airport, so everyone was unable to leave. This left the South Vietnamese citizens with only one option of leaving the country. This option was “Operation Frequent Wind.” This United States operation was the largest evacuation via helicopter that the U.S has ever commissioned. Saigon was being bombarded by large waves of North Vietnamese troops and artillery, so President Duong Van Minh decided to surrender, he was only the acting President for three days. North Vietnam did not listen to the ideas that Minh had proposed, they invaded Saigon and had almost all of its main areas, including what Presidential establishments were still standing, conquered. South Vietnam was officially under the control of North Vietnam. North Vietnam had decided to rename the city Ho Chi Minh City, who was a former North Vietnamese President. The importance of this event was clearly marked by the official end of the Vietnam War.
